Description

This bundle is meant to teach the process of scientific inquiry, and reinforce those lessons throughout the school year. This includes 2 interactive lecture note sets, a student led lab product, testable question template, and a BONUS FREE strawberry DNA extraction demo assignment.

Products Included In This Bundle

Student Led Green Bean Experiment:

I have built this lab to be a summative assignment after teaching scientific methods. Students were also given content about plant anatomy, physiology, and a basic understanding of photosynthesis. I used this as a summer school credit recovery assignment for biology.

Students will choose 1 of 3 variables to change about their lab, to test which variable they believe would grow a taller green bean plant. They then have to identify variables, create a basic hypothesis, complete research, write and review their procedures, collect data (recorded in data log), and write a conclusion paragraph. It gives students the opportunity to design and execute their own lab with some scaffolded measures in place.

Total preparation of the lab takes 1-2 class periods, and upkeep/measurements of plants require approximately 5-10 minutes daily.

Included in this Product:

- Student Lab Template (Google Slides)

- Student Lab Log (pdf print)

- Universal Lab Rubric

Scientific Inquiry Deep Dive Nearpod Lesson:

This is a nearpod activity. Nearpod is a free app that communicates with google classroom that allows you to interact with your students similar to that of zoom but you are able to see when they are on the correct tab.

This activity takes students through the process of creating a testable question, hypothesis, variable identification, differentiate between quantitative and qualitative data, lab procedure design, and practice a lab notebook template. This is designed to be interactive between you and your students. It includes multiple forms of informal assessment and a self assessment concept check at the end. Once it is added into your library, you have complete access to edit as you please.

This nearpod assignment can be used as a live lesson, or can be assigned for students to complete individually. This is an optimal option for a hybrid model of teaching in person and virtually, or a completely virtual model.

Included:

- Nearpod activity link
- PDF of slides
- Compressed Slide jpg's
-Credits/TOU

Phenomena Roulette

This is a nearpod activity. Nearpod is a free app that communicates with google classroom that allows you to interact with your students similar to that of zoom but you are able to see when they are on the correct tab.

This activity allows for practice creating testable questions using multiple rounds of phenomena. there are a total of 8 phenomena provided. This includes an image and some details about the phenomena. This is designed to be interactive between you and your students. Once it is added into your library, you have complete access to edit as you please.

Included:

- Nearpod activity link

- PDF of slides

-Credits/TOU

Phenomena: Creating a testable Question:

When teaching through phenomena introduction, I usually have a group activity where I have my students complete a driving question board. However, In order to encourage a better testable question, I have created this assignment that not only makes students identify the "what" of a testable question, but also the "why" of a testable question. I've used this at the start of every unit, every phenomena to reinforce what a testable question is.

Can be used for distant learning

Includes:

  • Testable question template
  • Lab Design Brainstorming space
  • Rubric for rating 1-4 scale, with revision opportunity

BONUS FREEBIE Strawberry DNA Extraction Demo & Student Fact Sheet:

This assignment is a strawberry PCR. It follows basic strawberry PCR instructions, and can be completed as a demo, or can be expanded for an entire class lab. I modified this assignment to create an opportunity for students to construct a hypothesis of what would happen in certain scenarios of incorrect lab execution. A fact sheet has been included for students to review what each of the core reactants are doing to the strawberries in order to properly extract and collect it's DNA. This is something I did with my students to comply with competency based education. It is hands on and helped prepare them for Mitosis/cell cycle.

Included within this assignment: Hypothesis guidelines, youtube link to extraction results video, student fact sheet.
