Description

In this investigation, students explore what determines whether a fraction will be a terminating or recurring decimal (repeating decimal). They explore different fractions and the prime factorization of the denominator to then observe patterns before drawing some conclusions.

Investigations are a key part of mathematical learning. Encouraging students to explore patterns, make observations, draw conclusions and try to justify these are essential skills of being a mathematician.

Students appreciate the independence this resource provides. It is written, visually uncluttered, and of appropriate length. The resource effectively links multiple skills and concepts they recently learned, bringing the theory together nicely. As I teach in Australia, I appreciate that the vocabulary is not American. I want more resources like this; keep up the great work.

Convert a rational number to a decimal using long division; know that the decimal form of a rational number terminates in 0s or eventually repeats.
Know that numbers that are not rational are called irrational. Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and convert a decimal expansion which repeats eventually into a rational number.
