This Test Prep: Division Word Problems: Two Step Problems (3.OA.8, 3.OA.2) worksheet set is Common Core-aligned to help you meet the new Standards for Mathematics. The worksheets serve as test prep and lesson practice for Common Core Standard 3.OA.8 (solving two step word problems) and Standard 3.OA.2 (interpret whole number quotients). My third graders (inner-city, low socioeconomic background, English Language Learners) really love these colorful, scaffolded worksheets!
THIS DIVISION FACTS WORKSHEET SET IS NOW ALSO OFFERED IN A 3-IN-1 BUNDLED SET IN MY TpT STORE.

There are 3 Test Prep: Division Word Problems: Two Step Problems worksheets, all identical in form but with different problems. All of the worksheets come with their own answer sheets, with all answers in red, for easy grading.
I used the first sheet after my lesson, gave the second for homework, and followed the next day with the third for a quiz.
All worksheets come with an answer sheet which allows for two different types of scoring: quick scoring (right or wrong), and partial-credit opportunity scoring.
These Test Prep: Division Word Problems: Two Step Problems worksheets will help your students practice the concept of finding an unknown group using division and multiplication, and are are typically used for a lesson following an introduction to the concept of fact families and division.
The examples on each worksheet get more challenging as the students work down the page, so struggling students will experience early success and be more likely to attempt the more challenging examples. The second page is a Mixed Review, with a “breather” of skill work at the top, before they need to tackle more word problems.
Examples include:
Step One: Identify the number of objects together from two groups (addition)
Step Two: Divide into other groups.
(All word problems on the first page follow this format.)
Skill work: Find the product.
Skill work: Find the missing factor.
Skill work: Find the quotient.
Skill work: Find the quotient with a remainder.
Mixed Review: Multiplication and division word problems.
The first page focuses on the new skill being taught, with grids, using the Show It, Solve It, and Explain It method to ensure that students are able to discuss how the mathematical concepts are applied. I find that separating and labeling these sections allows my English Language Learners (ELLs, ESL students) to focus on each task. The second page of each worksheet serves as a “mixed review” of skills and multiplication and division word problems, so that students do not get too comfortable solving problems in only one way. Together, both pages allow the teacher to determine exactly where a student may be “stuck.”
I have found this kind of progression very helpful for:
student grouping decisions
creating Response To Intervention (RTI) paperwork
consulting with other teachers to decide upon needed services for a student
meeting with parents
My students need a lot of support and repetition with mathematics, and I found that using worksheets such as these improved retention of the practiced skill. I hope you find these as useful as I do!
