How do students identify the text features?
two versions:
- write the name to label the text features
- color the text feature based on a color guide given
Are there comprehension questions?
Yes, half of the passages include 2 basic comprehension questions.
What is included in the text features lesson?
- an introduction of what text features are and how they are used in reading
- posters defining each text feature and how it helps readers
- 3 sample nonfiction passages with text features as well as discussion prompts and think alouds
What format are the slides in?
Powerpoint and google slides are both included.
Can you edit the slides?
The only editable part is the definition of the text features.
Do I need to use the Comprehension Crew with this?
The astronaut featured is Tito The Text Feature Explorer from my Comprehension Crew series. If you do not use the Comprehension Crew, no problem at all it will still be meaningful because the character:
•creates a memorable connection for the students
•connects the skill to a concrete profession
•makes it fun with a catch phrase
How can I best teach text features in my classroom?
- use this as a mini lesson to introduce text features
- review a single or all text features
- during small groups, use the sample articles to dive deep into thinking aloud to interpret the included features
- use as a quick visual support when asking, “How did the _____ help you understand the information?”
- keeps whole group discussions student-centered and meaningful- going past just identifying
