Description

Help your first graders build confidence with addition through the Thanksgiving Count-On to Add task card set! This engaging, holiday-themed resource is designed to support CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.C.5 — relating counting to addition — using fun seasonal prompts and hands-on practice.

Provided in this set is 12 Thanksgiving Themed task cards that deal with addition. Each math story problem is different allowing the students to solve simple addition word problems using the skill of counting to add on. It is a fun and engaging way to have students solve these problems. None of these problems involve money.

What’s Included

  • A set of task cards (number of cards as per your resource) featuring Thanksgiving scenes & objects, where students use count-on strategies to add (e.g., start with a number, count up a smaller addend)
  • Student recording/response sheet to write their addition sentences and show their counting steps
  • Teacher answer key for quick checking

Standards & Skills Addressed

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.5Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).
  • Addition within 20, especially using counting strategies rather than counting all or rote memorization
  • Developing number sense and mental math skills

How to Use

  • Perfect for math centers, partner work, or small-group instruction during the Thanksgiving season
  • Use as a warm-up or exit ticket activity: display a card, have students “count on” to find the sum, then share out
  • Use response sheets for students to show their thinking / counting path (helps you assess who is using the counting strategy vs. brute forcing)
  • Great for differentiating: some cards with small “count on” jumps (e.g. +1, +2), others bigger (e.g. +3, +4 or more) depending on students’ level

Why Teachers Love It

  • Seasonal theme helps engage students & ties into holiday excitement
  • Focused practice on a foundational first grade standard: counting to add — this builds toward fluency and stronger addition/subtraction understanding
  • Low prep: task cards + recording sheets + answer key are ready to go
  • Flexible implementation: whole group, centers, early finishers, homework
