Description

Students will practice writing linear equations and expressing them in multiple ways (table of values, words, and graphing linear equations) in this creative open-ended Thanksgiving math activity!

Your students will use their thinking and inquiry skills in this open task to create their own linear equations and make connections to express them in different forms.

This minimal prep printable activity has 30 templates to choose from to differentiate for your students’ needs.

Some students may need a starting point to begin, so a variety of templates include a piece of given information (e.g. a table of values, graph, or equation in slope-intercept form) to help students get started.

Choose from 3 different Thanksgiving-themed outlines (apple, pumpkin, or pie) to engage your students in this creative Thanksgiving activity and to create a colorful seasonal display of student learning in your classroom!

A clickable Table of Contents is included to quickly help you find which templates are the best fit for your students!

*See the full Table of Contents listed in the preview above!*

Prior knowledge for this graphing linear equations activity:

Best used toward the end of a unit on linear relations, students should have prior knowledge of writing equations in slope intercept form, and graphing linear equations from a table of values, an equation, and word problems. Students should also be able to create a table of values from a graph and linear equation.

What’s included in this writing linear equations open-ended Thanksgiving activity:

· 30 templates to choose from (12 completely open-ended, and 18 scaffolded templates with a piece of information provided to get started)

· Differentiated templates (noted above) so students can approach the task at all levels

· 3 Thanksgiving outlines/designs to choose from (apple, pumpkin, and pie)

· Each outline includes a detailed graphic organizer to help students organize their thinking and their work

· A clickable Table of Contents that links to all 30 templates

See a variety of templates in the product preview to ensure this fun activity will be a great fit for your class!

How to best use this writing linear equations activity:

· Excellent unit review for the end of a unit on linear relations!

· Fun and engaging activity around Thanksgiving or anytime in the fall!

· Great hands-on thinking activity to inspire discussion among students!

· Students can, if you wish, color and cut out their apples, pumpkins, and pies following their tasks, to create a beautiful, vibrant display of their learning around the classroom!

Interpret the equation 𝘺 = 𝘮𝘹 + 𝘣 as defining a linear function, whose graph is a straight line; give examples of functions that are not linear. For example, the function 𝘈 = 𝑠² giving the area of a square as a function of its side length is not linear because its graph contains the points (1,1), (2,4) and (3,9), which are not on a straight line.
Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities. Determine the rate of change and initial value of the function from a description of a relationship or from two (𝘹, 𝘺) values, including reading these from a table or from a graph. Interpret the rate of change and initial value of a linear function in terms of the situation it models, and in terms of its graph or a table of values.
Describe qualitatively the functional relationship between two quantities by analyzing a graph (e.g., where the function is increasing or decreasing, linear or nonlinear). Sketch a graph that exhibits the qualitative features of a function that has been described verbally.
