  • Easel-ready activity with one card per page with pre-made answer boxes that can easily be assigned through Easel by TpT.

This convenient set of extending patterns task cards has your Thanksgiving math practice covered with practice for 4th grade skills like using addition and subtraction to extend number patterns and sequences, using multiplication and division to extend patterns, determining pattern rules and applying them to input and output tables, determining the nth term of an algebraic shape pattern.

The Thanksgiving themed graphics on each task card will grab your students' attention and help keep them engaged while they practice and review their way to mastery of growing and shrinking patterns. Whether you have students working together on extending algebraic patterns or practicing independently, task card activities are a great tool for helping them maintain focus and attention to the task at hand.

Concepts Included in Thanksgiving Growing and Shrinking Patterns Task Cards:

  • addition and subtraction patterns
  • multiplication and division patterns
  • input output tables
  • determining a pattern rule
  • and finding a pattern to the nth shape
  • word problems

PLEASE NOTE: The math problems in this algebraic patterns task card set are identical to those in my other holiday-themed sets of the same skill. Only the clipart has been changed to match the holiday/season.

To prepare these Thanksgiving Extending Patterns and Determining Pattern Rules Task Cards:

For traditional task cards: Print one copy of each card page. Laminate for durability to use year after year. Print enough copies of the recording sheets for each student in your class. B&W, PPT, and Google Slides versions are included for versatility.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Identify arithmetic patterns (including patterns in the addition table or multiplication table), and explain them using properties of operations. For example, observe that 4 times a number is always even, and explain why 4 times a number can be decomposed into two equal addends.
Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.
Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns, and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 0, and given the rule “Add 6” and the starting number 0, generate terms in the resulting sequences, and observe that the terms in one sequence are twice the corresponding terms in the other sequence. Explain informally why this is so.
