Thanksgiving Team Writing: Swap-a-Story Fun!

Need a quick, low-prep Thanksgiving activity that keeps every student engaged and writing? This collaborative team writing project is the perfect way to fill those pre-holiday days with purposeful fun, laughter, and creativity.

Students will love the surprise twist of this “swap-a-story” format — and you’ll love that it’s meaningful, easy to run, and builds classroom community at the same time.

💛 Why Teachers Love It

  • No prep required — print and go!
  • Every student writes and participates from start to finish
  • Perfect for short schedules or substitute days before Thanksgiving break
  • Builds collaboration, creativity, and confidence in a festive way

✏️ How It Works

Each student begins a story using one of the Thanksgiving-themed prompts. After writing a few sentences, they pass their page to the next teammate — who continues the story! The pages keep rotating until everyone has contributed. When teams read their final stories aloud, you’ll hear laughter all over the room and see reluctant writers fully engaged.

📄 What’s Included

  • Teacher tips and setup suggestions
  • Five Thanksgiving or fall-themed story prompts on holiday paper
  • Extra themed writing pages to extend stories or start new ones

This no-prep ELA favorite works beautifully for grades 3–6. It’s festive, flexible, and packed with the kind of joy that reminds everyone writing can be fun.
