Description

The Birchbark House Character Development activity is a cooperative group, evidence-based, standard-based, reading comprehension lesson that engages students. Tired of boring questions taking up too much class time and engaging only a few of the same students? All students will love collaborating with their peers in this structured group activity where each student has a group role, participates in group discussion (student guide provided), answers a character development question, and works with a group to write a collaborative answer and present information to the class.

Six questions are divided among six groups so that each group has a different question. Students independently answer the question then collaborate with group members to form a collaborative group answer. The questions are based on information from the "Winter" section of The Birchbark House novel. NO-PREP ACTIVITY:Just print the questions and answer cards (a total of only 12 pages to print). All you need is sticky notes and copies of the novel.

Extension Activity: While groups wait on the rest of the class to finish, students discuss a reflection question that they will complete on their own after discussion. Groups will have 2-3 minutes to present their question and collaborative answers to the class. Answers are provided for teachers.

THIS END-OF-NOVEL ACTIVITY TAKES 1-2 DAYS TO COMPLETE!

Questions are aligned to reading standards and Guidebook 2.0.

Students love to collaborate. This is also a great way to get reluctant writers to share ideas. I wish there were a few more questions included.
