Description
Originally published in 1843 and included in his famous short story, "Ligeia," two years later, Edgar Allan Poe's poem, "The Conqueror Worm," is a fantastic tale depicting the "tragedy, 'Man.'" Though not as famous as "The Raven," this poem is an enjoyable and original work that students can easily engage with. Furthermore, it has the same eerie, dark mood that characterizes his other texts. As with all poetry, there are many ways for teachers to teach this text from the master of gothic horror more closely. Whether your students engage visually or audibly, through conversations or individual work, this complete set has everything you'll need for one (or more) lessons on this great poem. It also serves as a great sub-plan or a fun halloween lesson.
This lesson set includes:
1) A detailed lesson plan with teacher instructions for each learning protocol
2) A 17 page slideshow that provides relevant background information, the poem itself, student instructions, and more
3) An introductory visual analysis to help students engage with the text
4) Printable copies of Poe's famous poem
5) 14 discussion questions that can be split into two worksheets (about the literary devices Poe uses and the text itself)
6) An answer key for all of the discussion questions
7) Instructions for creating a unique one-pager response to "The Conqueror Worm" along with a one-pager template
