Description

This experiment subtly introduces young children to acids and bases. It is a two part project. Simple definitions. I did this alongside a lesson on the board where I drew the pH scale (a number line 0-14). Wrote numbers 0-7 in red with 'Acids' written in red above it (to subtly introduce the idea that acids show up in red on indicators). I wrote numbers 7-14 in blue with 'Bases' written in blue above it ( to subtly introduce the idea that bases show up in blue on indicators). 7 was purple to indicate that it's 'Neutral'. I listed 4 examples for each below the pH scale in their allocated colors. He copied this under 'What Is A pH scale?'. This was for part one. For part two, I used a liquid indicator (this adds to the fun and keeps their attention). There are 7 pages.
