Description
Guide your students through The Hobbit, page-by-page! This annotation guide includes:
- 19 sets of annotation prompts, one for each chapter. Each chapter, your student will be prompted to highlight important specific plot details and to add notes into the margin. The notes are in response to comprehension and interpretation-based questions that will help them think critically about the text.
- An answer key that includes correct responses and page numbers for where the answers can be found.
- Suggested 12-day reading schedule
- Two options for using the guide: one option organized by my suggested 12-day reading schedule and the other organized by chapter.
- Hero’s Journey cheat sheet, as the annotations reference the Hero’s Journey
- Student-friendly instruction page
I taught The Hobbit for years without this annotation guide. Despite about 25% of my students being locked in and loving it, the other 75% were thrown off by the language and ever-moving nature of the plot. Despite their efforts, they just didn’t get it! I wrote this guide to draw their attention to what mattered in the text. I wanted to show them what to focus on and be able to explain little details of the plot while they read. I tell my students it’s like I’m able to interrupt their reading for important clues right when it matters, instead of actually annoyingly interrupting their reading every two seconds!
While writing this guide, I was also able to answer so many of my own questions I had about The Hobbit. I constantly referenced The Annotated Hobbit, edited by Douglas A. Anderson (which I highly recommend!). With its assistance, I got so much clarity over things that previously threw me off. I’ve included the most note-worthy ones in the guide!
As always, this resource is tested and approved by real students in my English classroom, and it’s a hit!
