Fill In The Blank Directions

This is an 4 page Fill-In-The-Blank Review of Part 2 of The Odyssey by Homer (Robert Fitzgerald translation). Included are the adventures: "Twenty Years Gone, and I am Back Again, Argus, The Suitors, Penelope, The Challenge, Odysseus' Revenge, Penelope's Test and The Ending."

After reading aloud, or listening to the audiobook, this allows the students one on one time to explore the text and familiarize themselves with the characters and events. It can be assigned all at once, but is also a great exercise to assign (by adventure, or by paragraph), as a Do Now, or review, of the previous day's reading.

• High interest and can be done individually, or in small groups
• Includes 4pg Answer Key, to be read aloud, or posted by the teacher, afterwards
• Events of the plot are summarized in chronological order
• Attention is also placed on important quotes and/or passages that are essential to the text
• Excellent source to help prepare for an upcoming test or quiz, especially as a group, or independent Study Guide

Upon completion, teachers may post the answers for the classes, or read aloud the summary, with students providing answers aloud, that belong in the blanks to check for accuracy. Keep in mind, not all answers need to be exact. For example: 

• Ex: Finally, Odysseus reveals his true identity and condemns the suitors for ransacking his home and trying court his wife."→ Teacher may choose to accept "date" or "marry" in place of "court."
• Ex: "Brabantio angrily accuses Othello of putting a spell on Desdemona, because she had previously rejected the idea of marriage, and the wealthy men of the country that had come seeking it from her." → Teacher may choose to accept "magic" or "charm" in place of "spell" and "matrimony" or "a wedding" in place of "marriage."
• Ex: "Polonius informs the king that Hamlet is on his way to meet with Gertrude, and that he will hide behind the curtain and report back." → Teacher may choose to accept "tapestry" or "arras"
• Ex: “Brutus begins to read the notes, from whom he believes are from the townspeople.” → Teacher may choose to accept “letters” as well
• Ex: "Macbeth and Lady Macbeth ask Banquo to attend a banquet that evening when he returns." → Teacher may choose to accept “feast" or "party"
