The Problem-Solution Path | Problem-Solving & Adaptability | SEL

Help students slow down their thinking when things go wrong and work through any difficult situation step by step — using a 6-step Problem-Solution Path, a worked example, real-life practice scenarios, and a 7-day problem-solver tracker.

This worksheet gives students a method, not just a mindset. The 6-step framework — Problem, Reaction, Pause, Adaptation, Outcome, Lesson — works for any situation students face at school, at home, or with friends. Once learned, it can be used independently without the worksheet.

What's Included:

Page 1 — Cover Page

  • Learning objectives, how-to-use guide, and end-of-worksheet goals

Page 2 — Worked Example

  • A fully completed example walking through all 6 steps using a relatable situation — forgetting homework
  • Students read this before starting their own to understand how each step builds on the last

Pages 2–3 — Your Turn: The 6-Step Problem-Solution Path

  • Students apply the full framework to a real situation from their own life
  • Step 1: The Problem — what happened and why it mattered
  • Step 2: Your Reaction — honest description of what they said, thought, or did
  • Step 3: The Pause — where they should have paused and what they could have said to themselves
  • Step 4: The Adaptation — a calm, helpful response that moves the situation forward
  • Step 5: The Outcome — what could happen if they respond calmly
  • Step 6: The Lesson — what this situation has taught them for next time
  • Includes a Step Check self-assessment box — students identify which step is hardest for them and why

Page 4 — Choose the Best Response (4 Practice Scenarios)

  • Students choose the strongest problem-solving response from 3 options across 4 real situations
  • Scenarios include: can't solve a question in class, friend challenges your idea, making a mistake at work, plans cancelled at last minute
  • Includes a brief explanation box for each choice

Page 4 — Reflection Questions

  • 5 structured questions including: which step was hardest and what it reveals, how emotions change when you focus on solving rather than reacting, and how to use the framework independently in the future

Page 5 — Going Deeper Challenge

  • Students apply the full 6-step path to a problem they are currently facing right now — not a past situation
  • Ends with a commitment to one concrete next action

Page 5 — My Problem-Solver Pledge (Gold Commitment Box)

  • Students identify the step they most need to practise and commit to how they will handle their next problem

Page 5 — 7-Day Problem-Solver Tracker

  • Daily tracker: Problem I faced? My first reaction? Did I pause? What I did — and what I learned?

Page 6 — Teacher Guidance

  • Lesson objective, opening script, page-by-page teaching notes, and key teaching points

Page 7 — Model Answers

  • Full model answers for all 4 practice scenarios and all 5 reflection questions with guidance notes

Skills Developed:

  • Structured problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Emotional self-awareness and honest reflection
  • Pausing before reacting — the pause as a learnable skill

  • Applying a repeatable framework independently in real life
  • Adaptability and resilience under pressure

Perfect For:

  • SEL and PSHE lessons
  • Character education and values-based discussions
  • Pastoral and tutor time — especially powerful after a conflict or setback
  • Restorative conversations and behaviour reflection
  • Homeschooling families and wellbeing programmes

Why Teachers Love This Resource:

  • The 6-step framework is transferable — students can use it for any situation, not just the ones in this worksheet
  • The worked example removes the blank page barrier — students see exactly how it works before starting their own
  • The Going Deeper challenge applies the framework to a current real problem — not a historical one
  • The Choose the Best Response activity works brilliantly as a whole-class discussion
  • Full model answers and teacher guidance included — zero prep required
