Description
PURPOSE:
In this project, students will examine the sugar content of popular beverages. Using the concept of rate and unit rate, students will explore how to compare sugar concentrations of various sizes of drinks using the nutrition facts given on the labels. This project also includes the option to tabulate the data using an excel spreadsheet program to learn how computers calculate formulas. Overall, this project has great transdisciplinary themes which span health, social studies, science, and mathematics.
WHAT’S INCLUDED:
This product contains:
✏️ The Step-by-Step Teacher Instructions
✏️ Suggested Visual Model of the Data
✏️ Other Resources
STORY:
Many diets today consist of counting calories or grams of fat, but many times we don't realize how much sugar we consume - especially in the things we drink. This becomes even more relevant in young humans. To visualize the concept, I made this project for my students who were convinced that many of their go to drinks weren't that sugary.
POSSIBLE EXTENSIONS:
In addition to filling out a table of data, students understand better how much sugar goes into the drinks they enjoy when you physically show them what 100g of sugar looks like. Sugar cubes can be purchased for very little cost at the supermarket. Once you calculate how much sugar is present in each beverage, I suggest make a display in your classroom of the mass of sugar for comparison.
Alternatively, your students may show interest in exploring other aspects of the nutrition facts labels or other formulas to run calculations in the spreadsheet software of your choosing.
MATERIALS/PRE-REQS:
Besides this file, you may require:
✏️ Computers/iPads (optional) – if you want to use spreadsheet software for calculations
✏️ Sugar Cubes (optional) – see possible extensions
