Thin-Slice Set: Rational Number Addition | Differentiated | Free

Try this free thin-slice problem set to help your students build fluency with adding rational numbers in a highly engaging, collaborative format.

Students work in groups of three on a vertical whiteboard, passing a single marker as they solve problems together. The problems are intentionally sequenced from easier to more challenging, allowing students to self-pace while still working toward the same learning goal.

This set progresses from:

  • Multi-digit integer addition
  • Decimal addition
  • Fraction addition
  • All with positive and negative numbers

The thin-slice structure naturally supports differentiation, encourages math discussion, and helps students build confidence as the problems increase in complexity.

This routine is inspired by classrooms that use vertical non-permanent surfaces and collaborative problem solving to promote reasoning and engagement.
