https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thinkercises-Basic-Level-Set-Books-1-2-2553853

Each activity sheet is an excellent resource for enrichment or extension learning including practice with analogies, improvisation writing, word connections, and brain teasers. Each activity sheet also focuses on one of six main math strategies:

- Look For A Pattern

- Guess & Check

- Draw A Picture

- Organized List, Table or Chart

- Working Backwards

- Act It Out

There are several ways you can use these activity sheets in your classroom:

*Select one or more puzzles each day for a quick, daily thinking warm up challenge

*Have students work in groups to solve a few or all of the puzzles. Groups can present and discuss what strategies they used to solve them

*Copy and cut puzzles apart for learning centers and enrichment practice

*Give the activity sheet as a weekly challenge to work on independently

*Excellent activities for early finishers

A "Progress Tracker" form is included to allow students to check or place points awarded for each of the different types of puzzles they are able to solve independently and correctly.

The problems in this book represent a variety of thinking skills. They are designed to help students practice the patience and perseverance involved in problem solving. Part of the fun and challenge of solving any puzzle is struggling with it until that moment of discovery that opens the "secret" to arriving at its solution.

My kids are loving this! I am using it as a tool to teach critical thinking skills, for test preps. I let them work on it for about 10 minutes then we go over it as a group. I use the "B" version with my 8th graders, they stomp and growl when they realize the age group it was intended for. They are learning to think beyond the end of their nose and that is exactly my goal!

Being able to differentiate along with a collaboration option with slides is important to our class. It was easy to do in this format and led to other ideas with projects. Thank you!

The key to engaging interest long term I've found is in the introduction. I use these each week with both my 5th grade and 6th grade students as warm-ups. What I have found is that the first couple of weeks that I introduce these puzzle sheets, we begin the puzzles together in class. I pull up the digital version on screen and use the interactive board to start the puzzles. Some students don't have a great deal of experience with many of the puzzles so it's a way to make them comfortable with seeing that style of puzzle each week. It also allows us to discuss and think aloud together some of the strategies different students come up with to approach and solve. When the puzzles are started together, it is an incentive that my students need to finish the puzzle and find the answer. Experiencing success in solving at the introductions of Thinkercises is a great motivator. They already have beginning strategies for solving when they are then given them to work independently. At the beginning of the next week, we also go over the answers to the previous puzzles. I like to emphasize the persistence needed to keep trying puzzles every week. Conquering them a little at a time, they see progress. I do not "grade" them per say but they cash in points earned for each puzzle solved each week. This earns treats at the end of the semester. That's a pretty good motivator too :)

Thinkercises worked great during Distance Learning! I have used them as a opener three times per week to get sleepy brains engaged and moving -- thank you!
