Description

This Google Presentation has a week of Three Little Pig themed math problems.

Each day has:

  • A word problem with 3 addends
  • A subtraction word problem
  • 2 graphing questions
  • An early algebra challenge
  • A Scrabble tile addition problem
  • There are 6 Three Little Pigs problems for each day.

I did these problems with my gifted 1st-graders in October to go along with a fairy tale unit. The problems might be better for on-grade-level 1st-graders during the 2nd semester.

My students used individual whiteboards to solve the problems.

There are 67 slides which include 6 problems each day and 5 solutions each day.

The day slides could be deleted if the teacher prefers to do more problems per day in fewer days. I did the 5 problems each day along with reading a different version of the Three Little Pigs. We finished our week with the students constructing a wind-resistant house for a fourth little pig.

The graphics are original Thornton Thinker graphics.

Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.
Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten.
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
