Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need physical locks? No. This is all digital so there is no prep.
How long will this take? Plan for about 45 minutes on average and adjust for grade level and ability.
What browser do I need? Your students will need access to Google and a Google account.
How do students access the activities? They will click on the cards and then make their own copy of each slide. They will get their combination for each lock from the slide and enter it into the form next to the cards.
What devices do I need? It will work with desktops, laptops, tablets, and most phones.
Can I embed this in Google Classroom? No. However, you can link out from it. It will not show results in Google Classroom.
How can I grade the activity? You will not be able to see responses on the form. If your students are working remotely and you want to give a completion grade, an idea would be to have them send you a screenshot of the ‘Congratulations Message’ at the end. Short Story Packet
Printable and Google Apps Questions and Activity Cards
This packet offers twenty-five reading questions with a key, plus 10 activity cards that cover elements of character, conflict, suspense, and foreshadowing. The questions and activities are straightforward, but also thought-provoking and will work for varying levels of ability. These activities are designed to go with the original version of the short story.
A few suggested uses for this packet:
-Assign reading questions and activity cards to all students.
-Give students a choice between cards and reading questions.
-Break the class into small groups and distribute an even number of cards to each.
Groups will work together to complete the activity on their card and will present it to
the rest of the class.
-Use the Google Apps option for the reading questions and pencil/paper for activity cards.
I have created a Google slides version of the reading questions for those who like going paperless. I have included a Getting Started with Google Apps/Google Classroom guide for those wanting to try it, but still have the print version to fall back on. This is a great way to show the use of technology in your classroom. If you aren't interested in using Google, no worries, everything is printable!
Please note: One activity card has a QR code and requires Internet access. Everything else is pencil/paper friendly.
I have also included my story elements pack that works for any short story.
