Transforming Functions Activity- Graph - Square and Cube Roots - Write Equations
Share

Description

Students will practice their skills with transforming square root and cube root functions, but with a fun twist! They will start with an equation and work through the process of graphing and then back to an equation and then to a description and then back to an equation.

Objective: This activity is designed to be fun, competitive, and educational with a game of “telephone” spin. It is  ideal for classrooms or where students can engage in collaborative problem-solving. They will work in groups of 4 students. This is a great way to strengthen their knowledge regarding cube root and square root graphs and equations.  We like to do this activity after direction instruction the previous day! It really helps students understand these graphs and equations and how they are all connected.

Disclaimer: Because of the "telephone game" nature, students will rely on each other’s knowledge so in order for this to be successful, students need to be proficient with these skills (otherwise it can be a bit of a challenge for the groups to finish the whole process).

Included:

Instructions Slide

Instructions Slide for Students (to be projected)

Example Slide to Show the Process

4 Different Problems (beginning with an equation) for the "Telephone Game"

After completing the activity, students will have worked on the following skills...

- Going from an equation (cube root and square root) to a graph

- Going from a graph to an equation

- Going from an equation to a description of the transformation from parent graph

- Going from a description of the transformation back to an equation
