Description
As we approach the presidential election, it is always fun to learn about the election while tying in math and learning!
This ADDITION ELECTION project provides both DIGITAL and PRINT versions that can be used however you choose! You can edit the project directions and rubric to fit the needs of your students.
The students can work independently or in a group to support a given addition strategy for adding two-digit numbers. The 6 strategies included in this project are using the hundreds chart, using pictures and models, the break apart method, using an open number line, using the standard algorithm, and using compensation.
THE CAMPAIGN: This part of the project requires students to create a slogan for their strategy (a teacher slide provides slogan examples), an explanation (can be a poster, written response, or video of them solving a problem), and 3-5 reasons why their addition strategy is helpful and effective!
THE PRESENTATION: If using in a virtual setting, you can have the students of the same strategy meet in a break out room video session to prepare for their presentation (rubric provides guidelines). The groups will present on a class video session or in the classroom and the other classmates will need to record at least one reason each group presents for their strategy as part of their grade.
THE WRAP UP: The students will VOTE for their favorite strategy, based on the presentations and reasons, and will then solve 6 two-digit addition problems using EACH of the 6 strategies (can be edited to the strategies you have reviewed with your students).
This product is the perfect way to wrap up addition strategies while tying in the election! ENJOY!
