Learning two digit addition with regrouping and without regrouping can be confusing for struggling learners. Make it easy to understand by adding tens and ones together and using base ten blocks worksheets. This no prep unit makes adding 2 double digit numbers with regrouping easy and fun to master!

Build up to 2 Digit Addition with Regrouping Sequentially

Follow this sequence to work up to more challenging skills:

  1. Use tens and ones blocks pictures
  2. Draw tens and ones blocks
  3. Use place value
  4. Use the standard algorithm

Within each of those levels, start with easier numbers and work up to harder numbers:

  • double digit to single digit addition without regrouping (23 + 5)
  • double digit to single digit addition with regrouping (47 + 8)
  • double digit to double digit addition without regrouping (31 + 34)
  • double digit to double digit addition with regrouping (58 + 27)
