Description
Solving multi-step word problems can seem like an impossible task to students. Problem solving is easier when it can be visualized and bar models using Google Slides (TM) can help students “see” the solution. Two-step problem solving will be no problem at all for your students after they work through the math problems in this digital addition and subtraction December-themed bar modeling unit.
This DIGITAL version of the popular Seasonal 2-Step Bar Models resources focuses on addition and subtraction concepts. The problems are based on Singapore Math Principles and center on the development of problem solving strategies for part-part-whole concepts and logical/inferential thinking for students in grades 3 and 4.
Included in this resource are 10 original 2-step word problems.
Labeling Bar Models – 10 word problems describing addition and subtraction scenarios. Problems vary between needing to add twice, needing to subtract twice or requiring students to add and subtract within the same problem. A work area is provided with each problem to help students link the math with the models. Each algorithmic model in the problem is editable – just type in the numbers and symbols to represent the number sentences. Students can relate the visual model to the abstract by completing the algorithmic model for the problem using symbols/numbers. Relating the computational procedure to the visual bar model reinforces the reasoning behind the math.
Directions on how to share this resource in Google Classroom (TM) as well as student directions and answer keys are included. The Google drive folder consists of three files:
*Google 2-Step Problems– activity for students to complete with a clear example showing how to use the work area and the bar model (13 p)
*Teacher Notes for Sharing– explains how to share resources using Google Classroom (7 p)
*Directions and Answer Keys– explains how to complete the activities and provides printable answer keys (4 p)
Thanks for checking out this resource.
