Directions:
Looking for some multi-step word problems that are modern, relevant and engaging to your high-school age students who are working on their functional math skills? Look no further! The following word problems require two-steps in order to complete them and the steps are broken down with guided questions to enable students to solve them independently.

Subjects of these word problems include: calculating change from trips to the mall, determine how many weeks it will take to save up for an item, planning a trip to a local recreation event, etc.
These word problems are aligned with the following common core standards:

Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.2
Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.

CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.3
Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding

CCSS.Math.Content.4.NBT.B.4
Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
