UIL Number Sense – Grade 4 | Column 2 Strategy & Practice

This resource is designed to help students succeed in the second column of UIL Number Sense, where strategy, efficiency, and decision-making matter more than simply completing every problem.

Column 2 requires students to recognize patterns, estimate when appropriate, and make smart choices about which problems to attempt and which to skip. This resource provides the structured practice and instruction needed to build those skills with confidence.

What’s Included

Strategy Practice Tests (Top-Half Focus)
Targeted practice that emphasizes the most commonly accessible second-column problem types, helping students maximize points early in the column.

Advanced / Challenge Strategy Practice
Focused practice for more complex, bottom-half style problems, including starred (*) estimation problems, LCM, prime reasoning, and multi-step computation.

Full Second-Column Simulation Tests
Multiple full-length simulations (18 problems each) designed to mirror real UIL second-column pacing, difficulty, and structure.

Skill Focus & Instruction Pages
Clear, teacher-friendly instruction pages that break down:

  • Mental math strategies
  • Common UIL patterns
  • Practice ideas and discussion prompts
  • Student notecard reminders to build a personal strategy toolkit

Answer Keys (Teacher-Friendly)

  • Accurate solutions for all practice and simulation tests
  • Starred (*) problems include acceptable scoring ranges (±5%) per UIL rules

How This Resource Is Used

This resource is built around a 1-hour UIL practice model and is intended to be used over time.

A typical practice may include:

  • 3–5 short, timed practice tests
  • Focused instruction on one Column 2 skill
  • Strategy discussion and notecard creation
  • Application through strategy or simulation tests
  • Ongoing spiral review of previously taught skills

Why Column 2 Instruction Is Different

Column 2 is not about finishing the test.

This resource helps students:

  • Identify high-value problems
  • Use benchmarks and estimation instead of formal algorithms
  • Build confidence with approximate answers
  • Develop smart time-management and skipping strategies
  • Maximize points under real competition conditions
