Understanding Abscesses: Hands-On Lesson + Drain Simulation

If you teach animal science or vet science, this lesson makes abscesses finally click for students.

Instead of just talking about infection and drainage, students actually model an abscess using balloons filled with shaving cream and food coloring. They perform a small “incision,” drain it, and connect what they see to real-world livestock treatment.

What’s Included

  • Ready-to-use presentation slides (what abscesses are, how they form, signs, treatment, and prevention)
  • Guided fill-in-the-blank notes with answer key
  • Step-by-step teacher prep instructions for the balloon simulation
  • Student directions, discussion questions, and cleanup guidance

Why It Works

✔ High engagement
✔ Easy-to-follow structure
✔ Real agricultural application
✔ Great for Animal Science, Vet Science, or Intro to Ag (grades 7–12)

Prep is simple, materials are inexpensive, and the learning sticks.
