"Early Humans" reading comprehension passage is provided in two reading levels.

3rd-4th Lexile band

5th-6th Lexile band

  • 3 Close Reading Activities (basic facts questions, vocabulary, questions for going deeper)
  • End of Unit Culminating Writing Activity
  • Guide to Close Reading Sheet

  • An opinion writing activity where students explain how they would celebrate and recognize our species' origins in the continent of Africa.
  • A creative writing activity where students imagine what modern invention they would take back to prehistoric humans and how that would affect the development of our ancestors.
  • An arts/writing activity where students draw an image of the modern world and write a note that would share with prehistoric humans to inform them about our own time.

The digital version of each packet includes ready-made, Google slides for you to assign to your class.

This packet is rigorous and Common-Core aligned. Questions have been crafted to move readers from basic, recall questions to higher-level text evidence-based questions to support their answers. There are 4 tasks/activities for the passage, moving from the easier tasks to more challenging activities. This offers a full-week's worth of close reading.
