"Very well done. My students are just shy of being able to hold a job. This is a great life skill to understand. They were not thrilled to learn how much is taken out for taxes/FICA. "

Description

This easy-prep financial literacy lesson uses realistic pay stubs to teach students how to understand their paychecks. Topics include gross vs. net pay, deductions, income taxes, benefits, and more. Includes Google Slides, guided notes, and a practice worksheet with answer keys!

Students will learn how to read and interpret the information provided on their pay stubs using realistic sample pay stubs. You will lead students through the guided notes using the included Google Slides. Students will learn about each part of a pay stub, including related vocabulary, as they fill in the blanks on the notes. Students will then practice their knowledge independently or in pairs on a practice worksheet.

A YouTube video recording of the lesson is included! This can be used to catch up absent students or for a day when you are out of the classroom.

Your students will be shocked by how much money is withheld from each paycheck, which leads to great conversations about the purpose of each type of tax found on the pay stub!

This was a quick fill in activity that actually taught real world skills. Not enough for a 90 minute upper high school class period, but a good 45-60 minute activity depending on your kids skill sets. There are guided notes w/a PowerPoint before the independent work section.
