Professional Development Outline: Understanding and Creating Objectives Based on StandardsDuration: 1 Hour
Focus: LEAP Indicator I.1 – Effective Teaching and Mastery of Standards
Audience: Educators
Objectives:Content Objectives:

  • Enable educators to determine the main idea of a standard and explain its support through learning objectives.
  • Equip educators to create clear, measurable objectives aligned with standards.

Language Objectives:

  • Foster use of professional vocabulary to articulate the process of breaking down standards into objectives.
  • Facilitate communication of the components of effective learning objectives among peers.

Materials:

  • PowerPoint presentation on LEAP Indicator I.1
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handouts with examples of standards and objectives
  • Exit ticket slips

Professional Development Plan:1. Introduction (10 minutes)

  • Slides 1-3: Discuss the importance of LEAP Indicator I.1 and its relevance to effective teaching.
    Interactive Question: "What key words stand out to you with this indicator?"
    Key Points: Keywords such as "effective," "demonstrate," "mastery."
  • Slide 4: Define what an objective is and its role in guiding student outcomes.
    Language Objective: Educators will use professional language to discuss learning objectives.

2. Breaking Down Standards into Objectives (20 minutes)

  • Slides 5-6: Explain that an objective should clearly state what students will be able to do by the end of the lesson.
  • Slides 7-10: Introduce Bloom’s Verbs and their role in identifying skills (e.g., analyze, determine, summarize).
    Interactive Activity: Practice breaking down a standard into concepts, skills, and context using provided examples.
    Guided Practice: Work through Math Standard 6.NS.C.5 and RI.4.2 together.

3. Independent Practice (20 minutes)

  • Activity: Participants practice breaking down standards into objectives individually or in pairs using pre-selected standards.

4. Review and Share (5 minutes)

  • Participants share their objectives with the group.
    Feedback: Provide constructive feedback and correct misconceptions.

5. Exit Ticket (5 minutes)

  • Activity: Create a Content Language Objective (CLO) using a standard they will be teaching next week.
    Prompt: "Students will be able to [skill] the [concept] in [context]."
