Description

This product is a Reading Comprehension Curriculum focused on Inference Skills

This curriculum uses the example of the Anthurium flower to teach students how to make inferences from a text. It provides a passage filled with descriptive language and clues about the flower, and then asks students a series of questions that require them to use those clues to draw conclusions that aren't explicitly stated.

Why this is useful for Educators:

  • Develops Critical Thinking:  This curriculum helps students move beyond simply understanding the main idea of a text and teaches them to analyze information, identify connections, and draw logical conclusions. This is a foundational skill for critical thinking and problem-solving in all areas of life.
  • Improves Reading Comprehension: By practicing inference skills, students become more adept at understanding the deeper meaning of a text. They learn to "read between the lines" and consider the author's purpose, tone, and underlying message.
  • Boosts Engagement:  This approach to reading comprehension can be more engaging than simply memorizing facts. It encourages students to be active participants in the learning process, asking questions, making connections, and uncovering the hidden details within a text.
  • Applicable Across Subjects:  Inference skills are not limited to language arts. They are valuable in all subjects, from science (drawing conclusions from experiments) to history (analyzing primary sources) to math (interpreting data and solving problems).
  • Provides a Framework for Discussion:  By using this curriculum, educators can spark discussions about the text, encouraging students to share their interpretations and defend their inferences with evidence from the passage.
