Description
Give your students the edge in graphing the motion of freely falling objects with this activity! Field-tested with hundreds of students and years in the classroom, designed to get maximum results with minimum time invested for both student and teacher!
After mastering the problems on vertically launched and freely falling projectiles posed in Activities 19, 20 and 21, this activity will help students take the graphing knowledge they worked on earlier (Activities 9-18)
Students will sketch their own (vertical) displacement, velocity and acceleration graphs given descriptions of an object’s motion. Then, they’ll be given a run of multiple choice questions (common on most standardized assessments) about freely falling objects, ending with a oft-overlooked graphing question governing the (nonexistent) effect of mass on a freely falling object.
Correlates with standards and questions on the New York State Regents Exam in Physics. Also aligns strongly with many other standardized test questions in linear motion (AP Physics 1/2, SAT II Physics).
Activities:
- Sketch (vertical) displacement versus time graphs for various freely falling objects
- Sketch (vertical) velocity versus time graphs for various freely falling objects
- Sketch (vertical) acceleration versus time graphs for various freely falling objects
- Select correct graph to describe motion of freely falling objects
- Select correct graph to illustrate effect of mass on acceleration of freely falling objects
Contents:
- 9 problems
- 6 graphs to sketch
- 7 multiple choice questions
- Detailed Answer Key with step-by-step solutions for all short answer problems
- Activity comes in PDF format, ensuring accurate reprints
- Equation and Reference Sheet provided
