Description

Coding Unplugged - Understanding the "If Then" language of computer code for Kindergarten. This Beginner Coding resource gets students involved playing group games, filling in maps, playing a partner board game, and practicing code on their own printable computer screen. In each activity, the teacher or a student will be the "programmer" while the rest of the class acts as the "computers" following the commands of the programmer. The simple "If....then" commands will give very young students the basics of computer commands. These activities will lay the groundwork for beginner coding. If your school implements an hour of code in your school, then these activities would be great to start with beginner coders.

Coding is basically a step-by-step guide for a computer to accomplish a task. Teaching children to code is an invaluable skill when it comes to preparing your students for the future. Coding helps kids develop academic skills, build qualities like perseverance and organization, and gain valuable 21st century skills that can translate into a career in the future. Young children need some basic pre-coding skills before they are ready to tackle full blown computer coding.

We used the 'If, then...' statement activity in my classroom and students did well with that. After speaking with my math facilitator, I learned that the Ontario Curriculum doesn't expect students to use if-then statements until grade 4. It is a good resource, but I won't be using it again for my younger students as focusing on sequencing in coding in early grades is the expectation.
