This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.
PART 1 – Movie questions
- 20 Comprehension questions in chronological order (this is a mixture of long answer and multiple-choice) with 2 short paragraph questions at the end. Answer key included.
PART 2 – Storyboard
- Students to create a 9-scene storyboard to illustrate and summarize key events in chronological order, identifying the main idea of each scene while strengthening sequencing and plot understanding skills.
PART 3 – Sentence writing
- Students first write sentences using each of the letters from the words “Up Movie” then write about places in the movie where they felt sad, happy and excited.
PART 4 – Creative writing in the form of helping a senior citizen.
- Students to imagine they need to help two senior citizens. In this task they need to write two ways in which they would help the senior citizens, describe the action of helping them, and then to include a drawing of themselves helping them.
It is aimed at the younger audience and normally I would act the scene out to give clues and help. It's great fun with kids after watching the movie.
This movie is about seventy-eight year old Carl Fredricksen who travels to Paradise Falls in his home equipped with balloons. He accidentally takes a young boy named Russell along for the ride. They both end up going on a great adventure.
Inspire students on Grandparents Day with lessons in courage, loyalty, kindness and the importance of intergenerational connections.

How can movies help students learn English and be educational?
Movies can be used as a follow on from a novel study
- There are a huge number of movies that have been adapted from books which allow for book to movie comparisons or simply as a reward for finishing the book.
Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable
- Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral part of a student's life.
Movies provides authentic and varied language
- It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real situations. This includes accents different to your own.
Movies gives a visual context
- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context. To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.
Variety and flexibility
- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions, debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarizing.
