Description
This Common Core operations and algebraic thinking lesson covers using fact families. The lesson includes research-based strategies and strategic questions that prepare students for Common Core assessments. In this lesson, students read the problem, and then write addition or subtraction facts in the same fact family. They finish by reading the fact family aloud. In addition to the lesson, there are four pages of independent practice with questions modeled after the Common Core assessment items.
This lesson is a shockwave file (.swf) that is compatible with all web browsers and operating systems on any PC, Mac, or Chromebook. Answers will pop onto the page with the click of a mouse or presentation remote.

Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
CCSSK.OA.A.2
Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
CCSS1.OA.B.3
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
