Description

Using models to develop student understanding of multiplying decimals is a powerful teaching strategy. This set of 24 task cards uses models to help students multiply decimals (tenths) by decimals (tenths). This helps students retain understanding better than just teaching them “the rule” for multiplying decimals. Additionally, state standards like Common Core and TEKS require student understanding and application of math models.

In this task card set, students will be completing two types of problems:
1) Interpreting models to write a multiplication number sentence and find the product
2) Analyzing a decimal multiplication number sentence to draw the model and find the product that matches the model

This task card set is perfect for 5th grade students before they begin multiplying decimals using the standard algorithm. Students will need supplies to color some of the models in order to complete this activity.

A recording sheet and an answer key are included. For full product details, please see the product preview.

These task cards are aligned to the following TEKS: 5.3.D
These task cards are aligned to the following Common Core State Standards: 5.NBT.7
