Description

Using models to develop student understanding is a powerful teaching strategy. This set of 24 task cards uses models to help students multiply decimals by whole numbers. This helps students retain understanding better than just teaching them “the rule” for multiplying decimals. Additionally, state standards like Common Core and TEKS require student understanding and application of math models.

In this task card set, students will be completing two types of problems:
1) Interpreting models to write a multiplication number sentence and find the product
2) Analyzing a decimal and whole number multiplication number sentence to draw the model and find the product that matches the model

This task card set is perfect for 5th grade students before they begin multiplying decimals using the standard algorithm. Students will need supplies to color some of the models in order to complete this activity. Included in the set are task cards with color models and another set with grayscale models. These print beautifully in color, but if you are printing on a black and white printer, I would suggest using the set with grayscale models for maximum contrast.

A recording sheet and an answer key are included. For full product details, please see the product preview.

These task cards are aligned to the following TEKS: 5.3.D
These task cards are aligned to the following Common Core State Standards: 5.NBT.7

Great Task Cards--Fix the Red and Pink Groups

So thankful for these decimal model task cards! Students have begun to understand them! Update: My only nag with these task cards now that I have had students use them, is the pink and red groups look exactly the same. Students were having a very hard time knowing where the red group ends and the pink group begins.

I appreciated the colored and greyscale version, but my students and I had trouble grasping how the grid models had colors but not to indicate groupings. You have to count each "section" as its separate group and not a part of a whole group of that color. We were counting all the blues, yellows, greens, etc together as a part of a full group.
