Ugh! Properties, why do we have to learn this?! In this lesson, I’ve designed specific examples where using the associative, commutative, and distributive properties will make arithmetic with rational numbers EASIER! Maybe, even calculator free. (Gasp!) These strategies support many of the Common Core Math Practices and can help students perform many calculations in their heads.

This lesson is part of my Real Numbers Unit which includes a module review, a module practice test, and a module test with answer keys.

ALSO INCLUDED:

Answer Keys: All questions and exercises have complete and detailed answers with the step required to solve problems.

Editable Files: Microsoft Word versions of the student version of files are provided if you would like to edit the documents. Documents might be editable in Google Docs, but formatting may not transfer with full fidelity.

Curriculum Map with Standards and Pacing: (See preview) The Curriculum Map shows where this resource fits within the unit of this course. Additional resources can be purchased individually or as part of the full unit.

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract rational numbers.
Understand that multiplication is extended from fractions to rational numbers by requiring that operations continue to satisfy the properties of operations, particularly the distributive property, leading to products such as (–1)(–1) = 1 and the rules for multiplying signed numbers. Interpret products of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
