Valentine’s Area & Perimeter Projects | Project Based Learning Math Activities

Make area and perimeter meaningful with these two engaging Valentine-themed math projects that challenge students to design, calculate, and analyze real-world spaces. Perfect for upper elementary math review, enrichment, or seasonal project-based learning.

This resource includes two hands-on design challenges that move beyond basic computation and require students to apply area and perimeter concepts through planning, problem-solving, and written analysis.

Project 1: Valentine Card Creation Center

Students design a Valentine Card Creation Center using a grid, where each section represents a different station in the workspace. Some side lengths are missing, requiring students to use area to find unknown dimensions before drawing.

After designing the layout, students:

  • Complete a chart showing area and perimeter equations for each station
  • Show their work and solutions
  • Answer challenge word problems that require deeper reasoning about their calculations

Project 2: Valentine Treat Prep Kitchen

Students take on the role of planners for a new bakery opening just in time for Valentine’s Day. They choose their own lengths and widths for five bakery sections, design the layout on a grid, and label each space.

After designing the layout, students:

  • Write area and perimeter equations for each section
  • Analyze their calculations
  • Respond to follow-up questions that extend understanding beyond computation

Why Teachers Love This Resource

  • Two complete, rigorous math projects
  • Real-world problem-solving with choice and creativity
  • Strong alignment to area and perimeter standards
  • No romance or dating themes — classroom appropriate
  • Print-and-go format

What’s Included

  • 2 Valentine-themed area & perimeter design challenges
  • Student grid pages
  • Calculation charts
  • Challenge questions and word problems
  • Answer key

This resource is perfect for February math centers, enrichment, early finishers, or project-based learning days.
