Description
This is a one page (double sided) work sheet that shows students what type of alphabet Vikings used. The "futhark" alphabet it shown with the corresponding english sound below it. There is a riddle to solve, a few Viking words to translate, and then has students answer a few questions about themselves in runes as well. I've used this in World History talking about the Norse people, Mythology, in a unit on Beowulf, and I'm sure it can be used for many other subjects as well.
In case you do not have a background in language, I have two helpful hints for solving the worksheet: W = V, and the letter that looks like a weird P = TH.

I use this for my History of Games and Sports elective. I use it as part of a coding unit. The kids love to learn that the sign for Bluetooth is actually a Viking Rune!
Viking Runes
It was difficult to decipher the code. Some letters weren't clearly noted.

It was challenging enough for my 10th/11th graders that it was great to use up time (our classes are 90 minutes). They were so engaged to solve it too.
Fine for a free resource. I needed to supplement this resource with other materials in order for it to be useful and make sense to my students.
My students enjoyed this resource and understood the concepts given. Thank you!
My students enjoyed this activity to decode and write using tunes.
