Description
The Village Building Project requires students to build a model 3D village with specific buildings and resources. It also requires students to create a map of the village drawn to scale. The Village Building Project is perfect as a quarter-long out of class project or an in-class project that takes several weeks to complete. The project includes instructions on the project requirements, a rubric for easy grading, and a chart for students to fill out their math calculations in. The project requires students to demonstrate the following skills: geometry construction, map-making (including drawing to scale), conversion of percents, decimals, and fractions, finding area/perimeter, and critical thinking regarding scale factor. The project allows students to demonstrate their own creativity while also displaying mathematical content knowledge. It works great as a solo, partner, or group project. In addition, it is easy to integrate other subjects. For social studies, students could study societies and create cultures or governments for their village. For science, the students could look at the plants and animals near their village resources. English classes could write stories about what it would be like living in such a village. The project would most likely work best in a middle school or high school setting, but it could easily be adapted for elementary school students. If you like this project, you might also be interested in the Castle Building Project also by Algebrains.
