Critical Thinking Activities, Philosophy, middle school, high school, ChatGPT

Visual essays offer students a refreshing, creative outlet for showcasing their knowledge and understanding. They perfectly combine critical thinking with artistic expression, ensuring a meaningful, engaging, and unique experience for students to demonstrate their learning.

Moreover, cheating has unfortunately become an ongoing issue in students’ education. With the development of essay generators like ChatGPT, it is too easy for students to acquire quick and plagiarized essays. The visual essay is a great alternative.

Research has shown that visual aids stimulate learning and help students process, organize, and understand information more effectively. Visual essays, in particular, can facilitate complex ideas and new ways of thinking, leading to higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. Moreover, visual essays prepare students for the real world by developing their visual and communication skills, which are essential in various professional fields. On top of that, they are a perfect way to teach figurative language, as this assignment works best with texts that employ figurative elements.

Hi there

Thank you so much! I’m glad it was helpful as an alternative when traditional assessments aren’t the best fit.

Idea is good but the materials provided are not.

I appreciate the idea of the visual essays and the examples are nice but the materials are lacking. Specifically, I made a copy of the student material slides per the instructions for Google Slides but they aren't editable once you "own" them. I'd like to change some of the wording, remove the point grading scale and add my own, use language we have used in class, etc. but the slides must be images because the text is not editable. I purchased this to save time, but I'm having to make all my own materials now.

Hi Charles

Thank you so much for your purchase and for taking the time to share your feedback. I’m truly sorry to hear that the resource didn’t meet your expectations, and I understand your frustration—especially when you’re hoping to save time and streamline prep.

To clarify, this resource (like many on TpT) is not editable due to copyright and design licensing restrictions. Most products on TpT are not editable unless they are explicitly marked as such.

Thank you again for your support. I hope you are able to utilize parts of the product.

This was a waste of money. 3 pages were somewhat of use but the others are just examples. When titled Critical thinking Activities I would strongly think that there would have been questions or ideas to get the students to think like that. I found better information and explanation off the internet.

Hi Linda

I'm sorry you feel that way. The entire activity—asking students to create a visual essay—requires critical thinking. One aspect of Critical thinking usually involves asking students to demonstrate their understanding of a text. Another is textual analysis. The assigned text is where the different levels of critical thinking emerge. So, you will need to assign a text that challenges your students. This assignment cannot include a question set as the texts are different. The student examples are helpful to show the students what is expected of them. I find showing them examples helps tremendously. I hope this helps clarify this assignment. Thank you for your purchase Linda

From the moment my students began using this product, I noticed a shift in their engagement levels. Students who were usually reserved in traditional essay assignments found their voice through visuals, articulating complex ideas with clarity and creativity.
