Description
A reading comprehension and cartoon drawing activity that has your students 100% engaged while they practice visualizing and making inferences. Students read a comic about villains causing chaos in a city. Next, they use the descriptions of 4 villains and 4 heroes to visualize and draw them. Students can easily draw each character by tracing various body parts (i.e. eyes, ears, mouths, noses) from the provided cartoon sketch template. Even the students who are reluctant to draw, find this activity appealing. After creating posters with their sketches, students will use the comic and character descriptions to make inferences and answer open-response questions. Students are also invited to use the cartoon sketch templates to create their very own villain or superhero. This provides them with an opportunity to write a detailed description of the character they created. This is an excellent way to obtain a diagnostic assessment of their descriptive writing. Trust me, your students will want to do this activity again and again!
BEFORE YOU BUY, consider purchasing this resource as part of Visualize, Draw, Describe - Cartoon Sketch Artist Activity Bundle.
WHAT'S INCLUDED:
- TIPS FOR TEACHERS: Directions on what to do at each stage of the lesson.
- READ-A-LOUD STORY AND CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS: You and your students read a comic story about 4 mysterious figures who cause problems throughout a city. Students will then practice highlighting the words, numbers, and comparisons from character descriptions that would help them visualize.
- CARTOON SKETCH ACTIVITY: Students are given the task of sketching the villains involved in the citywide takeover and the superheroes that need to be tracked down to help. They begin by using the items they highlighted in the character descriptions to determine which body parts from the cartoon sketch template they should include in their sketches. They can either draw the parts free-hand or trace them from the template.
- CARTOON SKETCH ACTIVITY ANSWER SHEET: An answer sheet showing the actual villains and heroes
- READING COMPREHENSION OPEN RESPONSE QUESTIONS: Students are given 4 open response reading comprehension questions. These questions require students to make inferences and then support them by citing evidence from the comic or character descriptions and using their own ideas. Versions with and without a graphic organizer are available for your students. Example answers are provided.
- CHARACTER CREATION AND DESCRIPTIVE WRITING ACTIVITY: Students create their cartoon villain or hero using the body parts on the cartoon template. Next, they write a detailed description of their creation. This is a great way to engage your students in descriptive writing.
