This is a dailly intervention to help increase students vocabulary and comprehension. I set the routine up to include a variety of research based best practices that help students improve their vocabulary such as: visualizing, breaking into syllables, repeated readings, relating words to known words (synonyms & content areas).
This routine can be used with any words the teacher chooses. Tier 2 everyday words that student see in their reading or Tier 3 content based words. Many of our struggling readers have a hard time with not only the meaning of vocabulary words, but also with pronouncing them. This usually leads to frustration and student give up or pretend to read.
This intervention is based on a teacher meeting with a student(s) for 5-10 minutes daily to provide direct instruction on how to decode the chosen words and learn their meanings. This instruction should be provided in addition to the core classroom instruction.
Frequency: 5 days/ week for 6-8 weeks (typical interventon time period) or you can use it longer if it's helping! Focus no more than 8 words per week. One set of words could also be focused on for 2 weeks if necessary.
Data Collection: Record the number of vocabulary words the student can correctly define on the Rating Scale at the beginning and end of the 5 days. Graph included to document data collected and help analyze student progress.
