Description

These 18 task cards will get your students engaged and excited (yes, excited) about learning. Students will practice finding the volume of cylinders, cones, spheres, triangular and rectangular prisms, and hemispheres. Students will have to use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of missing sides and should have a basic understanding of the parts of 3D shapes (such as slant height, B = area of the base, etc.) as well as be familiar with the formulas for these 3D figures.

I usually allow my students to use the End-of-Course exam reference sheet for geometry when completing these problems. That way they gain familiarity with the formulas and where they are located on their reference sheet. Formulas vary according to textbook, state standards, etc. For example, some of us may find the volume of a rectangular prism by multiplying the length times the width times the height. Others may call the length “base” instead and use the formula for prisms V = Bh, where B is the area of the base and h is the height of the cylinder.

***There's also a digital and a hybrid print/digital version available.

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.B.7 Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.

CCSS.Math.Content.7.G.B.4 Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.

CCSS.Math.Content.7.G.B.6 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and Volume of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.

Check out the preview file for more info on the problems. Now in both black and white and color version with answers ready to be printed on the back of each card for immediate feedback.

Students prefer to work on task cards than on a worksheet. When I sit my students with a worksheet they complain about all of the problems that they have to do, even if they're working in groups. When I use task cards I usually print one set, split the class into small groups of three and rotate the
