Intervention for WH questions: what, who, where, when, why and how. When children are learning to process and answer WH questions, they usually follow a developmental and predictable sequence. “What” is the earliest question mastered, followed by “Who” and “Where.” Finally, an understanding of “When” and “Why” develop, with “Why” being the most difficult to master.

I have created an intervention tool based on the above information. Use the “Wh Questions Screening” to determine which wh questions need to be targeted. This screening will include all of the different wh questions. Then, based on the information gathered, choose which particular wh question(s) need intervention.

Ten questions are included for each of the following:

★ who

★where

★when

★why

★how

After the pre-test, use the included ◈ graph ◈ to plot the student’s present levels of performance of wh questions. Determine which question needs targeted intervention, pass out the intervention forms included to the teacher and parent. After the intervention has been completed, use the documentation forms to show data at the next intervention meeting. A quick and easy grading rubric has been included for the assessment.
