WHAT'S INCLUDED
☀️ Full Sunshine topic lesson — all 4 acts, complete and interactive
🎭 4-act inquiry structure for Sunshine:
- Act 1 · Mystery — students examine a real scientific puzzle (the sun is highest at noon, but the hottest part of the day is 3 hours later — why?) and hypothesize before the answer is revealed. Includes Science-in-Action Go Deeper for Grades 3-5 (NGSS ETS1): Stored Heat → Solar Thermal Plants & Battery Storage.
- Act 2 · Survive — 5 real Sunshine survival challenges explored through atmospheric science (high albedo, solar angle, UV rays, stored heat, windy shade). Includes CER Writing Frame with a full worked example for Grades 3-5.
- Act 3 · Explore — interactive Sunshine scene where students tap glowing hotspots to discover and read about solar phenomena one by one
- Act 4 · Analyze (Grades 3-5 Extension) — three deeper activities: Water Cycle Builder, Climate Verdict, and Severe Weather Files
✦ Act 4 · Analyze Extension Activities included:
- 🌀 Water Cycle Builder — sort 9 Sunshine-scene cycle players (solar energy, ocean surface, water vapor, mist, river, lake, soil moisture) into the correct stage. Interactive answer key included. Aligned to NGSS 5-ESS2-1.
- ⚖️ Climate Verdict — compare any two of 6 climate zones side by side: temperature, rainfall, seasons, top severe event, and climate threat. 3 analysis questions with sample answers.
- 🌪️ Severe Weather Files — full files on 5 major weather events (hurricane, tornado, blizzard, flood, wildfire) with formation, warning signs, scale, impact, and CER prompts.
📝 Sunshine K-5 Worksheet Pack — 17 print-ready pages spanning all 6 grade bands (Kindergarten through Grade 5) covering just the Sunshine topic. Full answer keys at the back.
✅ Answer keys included — Water Cycle answer key, worked CER example, sample Climate Verdict answers, and full grade-by-grade answer keys for the worksheet pack
📊 Real Sunshine data: solar surface temperature, solar constant, atmospheric facts
💻 100% browser-based — works on any device with a browser: projector, Chromebook, iPad, laptop. No login, no account, no app required.
✅ Aligned to NGSS K-ESS2-1 · K-ESS3-2 · 2-ESS1-1 · 3-ESS2-1 · 3-ESS2-2 · 3-ESS3-1 · 4-ESS2-2 · 5-ESS2-1 · 5-ESS2-2 · ETS1
HOW THE 4-ACT LESSON WORKS
Most weather lessons hand students a fact sheet. This one makes them think first.
The Sunshine lesson opens with a mystery — students observe the puzzle and make predictions before any vocabulary is introduced. Act 2 drops them into a heatwave on the blacktop and asks: how would you stay safe? They explore the real physics (albedo, solar angle, UV, stored heat) and write their own CER response using a scaffold with a worked example. By Act 3, students are ready to identify solar phenomena with genuine curiosity. Act 4 takes Grades 3-5 further into systems thinking: they build a water cycle, compare climates, and analyze severe weather.
The 4-act structure builds observation, scientific reasoning, and vocabulary naturally. It works for whole-class discussion on a projector, small group centers on a device, or independent exploration.
THE OTHER 7 TOPICS ARE VISIBLE BUT LOCKED
The free sample includes the full Sunshine lesson with all 4 acts AND the Sunshine K-5 worksheet pack. Rain, Clouds, Snow, Wind, Fog, Storms, and Seasons are visible in the tab bar but locked — clicking them shows an upgrade prompt. Students see the full scope before you upgrade.
The Climate Verdict in Act 4 compares all 6 climate zones for analysis practice — students can compare any two even in the free version.
