Description

Want your students to create their own weather forecast video to show their knowledge and understanding of weather? Try this activity! It is meant to be used with Canva.com, but I have included a Google slides version if you prefer that format (it just doesn't offer as many design and video editing options). Students will work in groups to record themselves forecasting the weather for the day as well as comparing to the forecast for the rest of the week and making a weather prediction for a snowy winter (which can be changed for your location). **It was written for North Carolina but you can easily change anywhere it says North Carolina to your state.

**Be sure to read the notes on the slides as they give further information and tips for you the teacher.

Contents:

  • Activity slides (Google, PDF, and Canva versions)
  • Example project video (mp4 and Canva versions)
  • Student video template (Google and Canva versions) -- includes directions to students in the notes of each slide for what to include and how to modify to make it their own
  • Link to Wakelet.com curated websites for students to use to help them gather information for their weather forecast

NGSSMS-ESS2-5
Collect data to provide evidence for how the motions and complex interactions of air masses result in changes in weather conditions. Emphasis is on how air masses flow from regions of high pressure to low pressure, causing weather (defined by temperature, pressure, humidity, precipitation, and wind) at a fixed location to change over time, and how sudden changes in weather can result when different air masses collide. Emphasis is on how weather can be predicted within probabilistic ranges. Examples of data can be provided to students (such as weather maps, diagrams, and visualizations) or obtained through laboratory experiments (such as with condensation). Assessment does not include recalling the names of cloud types or weather symbols used on weather maps or the reported diagrams from weather stations.
