Description
The purpose of this weather lab online simulation activity is for students to predict weather events that would occur based on the ocean currents and air masses present in a region of North America. This is a fun and engaging activity that promotes students to think about how characteristics of air masses being either tropical or polar, or continental or marine, influences weather events as these air masses interact with ocean currents. This weather pattern simulation can be used as a formative assessment in order to gauge student understanding about how different variables influence weather formation in an engaging manner.
In this product you will receive the following:
- Print PDF Copy- This is a three page pdf sheet consisting of two parts. The first part of this assignment consists of seven short answer questions. This is to prepare students for the type of content they will be expected to use in order to complete the simulation. The second part of this assignment is where students are given seven different scenarios and will then have to predict the weather event, students will then run the simulation and assess if they were correct with their prediction.
- Digital Copy- This is a digital copy of the assignment in Google Slides for any distance learners. Students will type in their answers in the blue text box provided.
- Answer Key- This consists of answers for the first and second part. The second part answer key consists of the results of the simulation only.
Materials you will need for this assignment:
- You will need student laptops/tablets that have Adobe Flash Player in order to run this simulation. Please check out: https://ssec.si.edu/weather-lab to see if this simulation is compatible with the technology you have available for your students.
- Print copy or digital copy of the assignment
I would recommend students work in pairs in order to complete this activity. This is a great activity to encourage students to discuss the content and use academic vocabulary. The other nice aspect of this activity is that students are able to get immediate feedback about their predictions along with explanations to correct any misconceptions.
I found this to be a fun and effective activity with my own students and I hope that you find this activity to be effective for your students as well.
Happy Teaching!
