WebQuest & Project: Trait Theory In Psychology
Understanding Personality Through Consistent Patterns Of Behavior

Essential Question
How do personality traits shape behavior and explain individual differences?

Background
Trait theory is an approach in psychology that focuses on identifying and measuring individual personality characteristics. Instead of emphasizing unconscious conflicts or developmental stages, trait theorists study patterns of behavior that remain relatively stable over time. These traits help explain why individuals respond differently to similar situations.

One of the earliest contributors to trait theory was Gordon Allport, who identified thousands of traits and categorized them into cardinal, central, and secondary traits. Cardinal traits dominate a person’s entire personality, central traits are general characteristics found in varying degrees in everyone, and secondary traits are more situation-specific.

Later, Raymond Cattell used statistical methods to narrow traits into 16 key personality factors. Building on this work, Hans Eysenck proposed that personality could be explained through three major dimensions: extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism.

Today, one of the most widely accepted models is the Big Five personality traits, also known as the Five-Factor Model. This model includes openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Trait theory is widely used in psychology, education, and workplace settings to understand behavior, predict outcomes, and improve communication. By studying traits, individuals gain insight into their own personalities and how they interact with others.
