Description

Help learners strengthen their visual discrimination and critical thinking skills with this “Find the one that’s different” resource! This engaging activity is designed to support students in identifying items that do not belong, making it perfect for early learners and individuals developing discrimination skills. This resource can be easily adapted for learners at different levels and is ideal for building foundational skills needed for assessments such as the VB-MAPP and ABLLS-R.

This resource includes 3 levels of difficulty, with 15 task cards per level, allowing you to systematically build from simple to more advanced discrimination tasks:

  • Level 1: Simple Discrimination – Students identify the item that is clearly different (e.g., 2 apples and 1 carrot).
  • Level 2: Complex Discrimination (Similar Items) – Students differentiate between items that are highly similar, with one subtle difference.
  • Level 3: Complex Discrimination (Category-Based) – Students identify the different item within a group from the same category (e.g., 3 types of cookies and 1 brownie).

To promote generalization, this set includes 2–3 variations of the same items presented in different positions across cards. This ensures learners are responding to the relevant features of the stimuli rather than memorizing placement.

These task cards are perfect for:

  • ABA therapy sessions
  • Task boxes and independent work stations
  • Small group instruction
  • Discrete trial training (DTT) or natural environment teaching (NET)

Skills targeted:

  • Visual discrimination
  • Attending to relevant features
  • Categorization
  • Critical thinking
  • Early problem-solving

This resource can be easily adapted for learners at different levels and is ideal for building foundational skills needed for assessments such as the VB-MAPP and ABLLS-R.
